To provide a realistic and ultimately useful guide we have used average salary ranges for each key position rather than one off maximum remuneration levels to avoid driving up salaries. While excellent candidates with the right skills and post qualification experience will always find motivated employers willing to offer salaries in excess of our guide range we have provided typical figures that take into account more rural locations and the differences we have experienced across our core East Anglia, the Home Counties and South East regions.

Key Findings

With demand and competition for professionals based in the region continuing to rise, the focus on skills shortages within the built environment sector remains a major factor driving salary reviews. Combined with the added pressure of attracting employees away from London to more rural locations companies face a difficult challenge in rewarding and retaining staff properly that could impact on future growth. 'Location' again came out as the most important factor when considering a job change, highlighting local pressures affecting employers in East Anglia.

One of the other key findings from our survey was the importance placed on added benefits and bonuses with performance related pay, professional memberships and flexible working conditions seen as the most desirable.

2018 continues to see a shortage of qualified professionals, salaries within property and surveying - with most seeing a significant increase above the UK wage inflation. In addition, we have experienced further geographical gaps, with the likes of Cambridge competing with salaries packages once only seen closer to London.

Research from our Surveying and Property survey indicates there has been a continued increase within real estate salaries in the region. Commercial property is still performing well, in particular within industrial and logistics. These sectors have seen an increase in demand driven by the lack of supply and few new developments helping boost the need within commercial agency. Brexit continues to fuel uncertainty within the UK property markets, but things have stabilised well in the areas within the Golden Triangle which continues to enjoy strong growth throughout. 

Our Architectural team continues to experience a buoyant market with vacancies for staff of all levels, regularly being registered from practices and housing developers. We have seen salaries increasing in line with this additional demand for staff, and the reduced numbers of experienced candidates available on the market. This is reflected in our findings from the salary survey this year which indicates that Architects in the East of England are paid on average £38,500.

Civil & Structural staff with intermediate level designers and recently Chartered Engineers continue to be in demand. We have seen significant local movement in salaries, particularly within Structural Engineering in the Cambridge market as clients attempt to attract from London and compete on salary and benefits. Development and Infrastructure positions from CAD Technician to Engineer have also seen salaries improve with strong competition between housing design teams and consultants.
